Syrian security forces killed four militants in an operation in Damascus on Friday in which they say they "foiled a terror operation". The raid was made in central Damascus on an uninhabited building close to the Syrian customs office and an army headquarters around Umayyad Square. The name of the group has not been released to the public yet but Syrian forces are saying it is a "terrorist and extremist group". Security forces say they captured 10 American made rifles, religious sermons and grenades and that they came from a neighboring country. Syria borders the countries of Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq. There has been regular deadly crackdowns on Islamic militant groups aimed at overthrowing the Baath party controlled Syrian government, which has ruled the country under a state of emergency since 1963.
